Around St Fillans on Loch Earn
|
In 1886 Frances H Groome said of St Fillans:
"St Fillans, a village in Comrie parish, Perthshire, on
the N bank of the river Earn, just below its efflux from Loch Earn,
13 miles W by N of Crieff, under which it has a post and telegraph
office. Both as to situation and structure one of the pleasantest
villages in Scotland, it comprises a range of slated one-story houses,
mantled with ivy and honeysuckle.."
Remarkably St Fillans has changed very little in the last 120 years
and retains the charm and peacefulness described above..

History. Once the seat of Chiefs
of the MacNeishes, Neish Island is a "crannog" (man made
island) that once supported Loch Earn Castle. There was, and is
still detectable today, an underwater causeway that allowed those
who knew the route to get to the island without the use of a boat...
but presumably with wet feet!
The MacNeishes occupied the castle from the 13th century until
disaster struck in the 17th century when they were virtually wiped
out by MacNabs. |
